Gear Lubrication
Gear Lubricant Plays Critical Role in Reducing Friction and Heat while Protecting Gears from Pitting and Corrosion Under Heavy Loads
Requirements vary considerably based on gear type, load, speed, operating temperature, and the environment in which the equipment operates. Enclosed gearboxes, open gears, and worm gear drives each demand specific lubricant properties to perform at their best. Therefore, it is imperative that you use a high-quality oil or grease suited to the gear type, load conditions, and operating environment. Also, be sure to match the AGMA grade and viscosity to the OEM specification.
We can help with this by recommending lubrication reliability best practices, including the right oil or grease, for most gear types. For example, we can help with spur gears, helical gears, bevel gears, herringbone gears, planetary gearboxes, open gears, and worm gear drives. In fact, we have years of documented success helping our customers maximize uptime while reducing maintenance costs. Royal Purple Industrial formulates lubricants using four exclusive additive technologies: Synerlec®, Synslide™, DynaGlyde™ and Purolec™ which are ideal for gear applications.
Qualities of High-Performance Lubricants for Use in Gears
- Ultra-tough film strength to maintain a protective lubricant layer under heavy loads, shock loads, and low-speed, high-torque conditions
- High-quality oxidation package for extended drain intervals and long service life in high-temperature gear applications
- Superior demulsibility properties to rapidly and completely separate from water, preventing sludge formation in wet gearbox environments
- Dense, high molecular weight cushioning additives to prevent fatigue failure in gears subjected to sudden shock loads
- Synthetic lubricity and oiliness properties that enable gears to run smoother, quieter, and cooler while extending time between overhauls
- High viscosity index for stable performance across wide operating temperature ranges, from cold startups to sustained high-temperature operation
- Nonfoaming in use to prevent cavitation damage and ensure consistent lubricant delivery to gear tooth contact zones
- Excellent rust and corrosion protection, noncorrosive to both ferrous and nonferrous metals including bronze worm wheels
- EP additives to protect against pitting, spalling, and scuffing at the gear tooth contact point, with the exception of worm gear applications using softer metals.
- Tenacious adhesion to gear surfaces for open gear and chain applications, resisting fling-off and wash-off in exposed environments

Reliability Solutions
After selecting your gear oil, the next step is to put the other lubrication reliability pieces in place. First, add oil analysis to begin predictive trending of the oil and asset condition. Second, use filtration to keep the oil clean and dry. Third, ensure the correct AGMA or ISO viscosity grade is matched to the OEM specification, operating temperature, and load. With these solutions in place, you can safely extend the life of the gearbox and the oil, which will in turn save you time and money.

Move Forward with Our Proven Solutions
Problem
Gear tooth wear is one of the most common causes of gearbox failure and unplanned downtime. Under heavy loads, shock loading, and low-speed, high-torque conditions, the lubricant film between meshing gear teeth can break down, leading to metal-to-metal contact. This accelerates surface fatigue, micropitting, pitting, spalling, and scuffing. Conventional mineral-based gear oils often lack the film strength needed to protect gears operating under these demanding conditions, resulting in costly replacements and lost production time.
Solution
Our high-performance synthetic gear oils are engineered with ultra-tough formulations that deliver exceptionally high film strength. Synergy® features slippery, synthetic molecules that greatly increase lubricity and oiliness, enabling gears to run smoother, quieter, cooler, and longer without overhauls. For severe service applications involving heavy loads, shock loads, low operating speeds, and high temperatures, Thermyl-Glyde® provides multi-synthetic protection with a dense, high molecular weight, cushioning additive that prevents fatigue failure. Products such as Synfilm®, Synfilm® GT, and Enduro-MP™ Grease round out a complete lineup for enclosed gear protection.
Problem
Worm gear drives present unique lubrication challenges. Unlike spur or helical gears, worm gears operate with a sliding contact rather than a rolling contact, which generates significantly more friction and heat. The bronze worm wheel is particularly susceptible to corrosion from aggressive EP additives found in many conventional gear oils. Additionally, the high sliding friction in worm gears demands a lubricant with exceptional lubricity to improve efficiency and reduce operating temperatures. Using the wrong gear oil in a worm drive can accelerate bronze corrosion, increase energy consumption, and shorten equipment life.
Solution
Our worm gear lubricants are specifically formulated to address the sliding contact and bronze compatibility challenges unique to worm drives. Synergy® Worm Gear is a para-synthetic formulation that delivers outstanding lubricity while remaining completely noncorrosive to bronze and other nonferrous metals. For higher temperatures and more demanding conditions, Thermyl-Glyde® Worm Gear offers a fully synthetic, multi-synthetic formulation that provides superior thermal stability and extended service life. Both products reduce friction, lower operating temperatures, and improve energy efficiency in worm gear applications. For high-temperature worm gear environments, Thermax™ provides additional thermal protection as a semifluid grease option.
Problem
Open gears, chains, and exposed metal surfaces face some of the harshest lubrication conditions in industrial settings. Without the protection of an enclosed gearbox, these components are constantly exposed to dirt, dust, moisture, and process contaminants. Conventional wet lubricants attract and hold dust and abrasive particles against gear tooth surfaces, creating a grinding paste that accelerates wear. In wet or acidic environments — such as mining, cement, and sugar processing — the problem is even more severe, leading to rapid corrosion and costly equipment failures.
Solution
Our open gear and exposed surface lubricants are engineered to provide tenacious, long-lasting protection in the most demanding environments. Max-Chain® is an advanced, high-performance synthetic lubricant with Synerlec® technology that provides excellent protection for chains, open gears, and exposed metal surfaces subjected to severe loading, even in wet, acidic environments. After the carrier solvent evaporates, it leaves a tenacious, dry, wax-like coating that resists dust and airborne contamination accumulation, with protection up to 400°F. MaxFilm® offers high film strength multipurpose protection as a synthetic lubricant and penetrant for open gears, wire ropes, and other exposed components. For general-purpose gear protection, Ultra-Performance™ Grease and Thermasil™ T-100 provide additional options, while Thermyl-Tuff® handles extreme-temperature exposed gear environments.
