Blower Lubrication
Blower Lubricant Plays Critical Role in Protecting Timing Gears, Bearings, Seals, and Internal Rotating Elements from Wear
Blower lubricant requirements vary considerably based on blower type, discharge temperature, gas composition, and the process environment. Rotary lobe (positive displacement) blowers, centrifugal blowers, regenerative blowers, and vacuum pumps each present distinct lubrication challenges. Therefore, it is imperative that you use a high-quality oil suited to the blower design, thermal demands, and gas being handled. Also, be sure to match the ISO viscosity grade to the OEM specification.
We can help with this by recommending lubrication reliability best practices, including the right oil, for most blower types and process environments. Whether you are moving air, biogas, natural gas, or process vapors, we have years of documented success helping our customers keep blowers running reliably while reducing oil consumption and maintenance costs.
Qualities of High-Performance Lubricants for Use in Blowers
- High film strength to protect timing gears, bearings, and seals that maintain critical rotor-to-housing clearances in positive displacement blowers
- Outstanding oxidation stability to withstand the sustained thermal stress of blower operation and deliver extended oil drain intervals
- Rapid water separation to shed condensate and prevent emulsion formation in blower sumps, particularly in humid or saturated gas service
- Chemical inertness and gas dilution resistance for blowers handling hydrocarbons, biogas, or corrosive process vapors
- Energy efficient formulation to reduce friction losses, lower power draw, and decrease operating temperatures across the blower system
- High viscosity index to ensure proper lubrication from cold startup through elevated discharge temperatures encountered during continuous duty
- Excellent rust and corrosion inhibition to protect precision components from moisture condensation and process gas exposure
- Nonfoaming characteristics to prevent oil carryover into the airstream, which can contaminate downstream processes and instruments
- Clean, deposit-free operation that minimizes varnish and sludge formation in oil sumps, sight glasses, and lubrication passages
- Filterability without additive depletion so oil quality is maintained even in systems with continuous bypass filtration

Reliability Solutions
After selecting your blower oil, the next step is to build a proactive maintenance program around the asset. Begin with routine oil analysis to monitor viscosity changes, oxidation levels, water content, and early wear indicators. Add proper filtration to remove particulates and maintain target cleanliness codes. Monitor discharge temperatures closely, as even small increases signal rising friction or degraded oil condition. With these practices in place, you can confidently extend drain intervals, reduce unplanned shutdowns, and get more productive hours from every blower in your operation.

Problem
Blowers generate considerable heat through the compression process and through friction in timing gears and bearings. Rotary lobe blowers, in particular, can produce discharge temperatures well above 300°F under normal operating conditions, and even higher when running against elevated backpressure or in hot ambient environments. At these temperatures, conventional mineral oils oxidize rapidly. As the oil degrades, viscosity increases, varnish coats internal surfaces, sludge accumulates in sumps and passages, and acid formation attacks precision gear and bearing surfaces. Shortened oil life means more frequent drain intervals, higher lubricant costs, and increased risk of unplanned downtime from bearing or gear failure.
Solution
Synfilm® GT is a long-life, high-film strength, energy-efficient synthetic lubricant specifically recommended for blowers, vacuum pumps, and turbines. It is extremely oxidation stable, performs reliably in reservoirs exceeding 200°F, and offers very low-temperature fluidity for cold startups. For standard air blower service where operating temperatures are moderate, Synfilm® provides a clean, dry, long-life synthetic oil with outstanding oxidation stability that significantly extends oil drain intervals. Both products rapidly and completely separate from water, keeping sumps clean and free of emulsion. When existing varnish and sludge have already accumulated from previous oils, Clean & Flush™ safely removes deposits while the blower remains in service, restoring system cleanliness before transitioning to a premium synthetic oil.
Problem
Blowers used in chemical processing, wastewater treatment, petrochemical facilities, and gas boosting applications frequently handle gases beyond standard air. Hydrocarbon vapors such as methane, ethylene, and natural gas dissolve into and dilute conventional oils, reducing viscosity and compromising the protective lubricant film on gears and bearings. Corrosive gases including hydrogen sulfide, chlorine, and sulfur dioxide can chemically attack both the oil and the internal metal surfaces of the blower. Biogas from anaerobic digesters carries moisture, siloxanes, and hydrogen sulfide that degrade standard lubricants at an accelerated rate. Choosing the wrong oil for these specialized gas environments leads to premature wear, seal leakage, and costly blower overhauls.
Solution
Crystal-Clear®, with Purolec™ additive technology, meets all requirements of a white mineral oil while delivering the superior lubrication of a synthetic. It resists dilution from hydrocarbon gases and excels in blowers handling hydrogen, nitrogen, CO2, helium, ethylene, methane, propane, and LPG service. Its chemical inertness makes it equally suitable for corrosive gas environments where conventional oils would break down. Crystal-Pure®, also with Purolec™ additive technology, extends this capability with enhanced purity for sensitive applications where the highest levels of lubricant cleanliness are required. Alkalube™, with Synerlec® additive technology, provides additional specialized protection for blowers in process gas environments where alkaline conditions or unique gas chemistries demand a purpose-built formulation. All three products protect blower internals from the chemical and dilution effects that destroy conventional lubricants in gas service applications.
Problem
Blowers run for extended periods, often 24/7, which subjects the oil to continuous thermal cycling and oxidation. Over time, degradation byproducts form a sticky varnish layer on gear teeth, bearing surfaces, sight glasses, and oil passages. Sludge settles in sumps and clogs filters, restricting oil flow to critical lubrication points. In severe cases, varnish buildup on timing gears can alter the precise clearances between rotors and the housing, reducing blower efficiency and increasing the risk of rotor contact. Many facilities inherit this problem when taking over equipment that was previously lubricated with inferior oils, and simply draining and refilling with a better oil does not remove the deposits already present in the system.
Solution
Clean & Flush™ is a safe, effective, and inexpensive product for removing sludge and varnish from blower oil systems while the equipment remains in service. It can be added to the existing oil charge to dissolve and suspend deposits before draining, or used as a temporary fill to clean the system before introducing a premium synthetic oil. This eliminates the need for costly manual cleaning or extended downtime for system disassembly. Once the system is clean, transitioning to Synfilm® or Synfilm® GT prevents future deposit formation thanks to their clean, dry formulations and exceptional oxidation stability. These premium synthetic oils are designed to keep blower internals free of varnish and sludge, maintaining proper gear clearances, reliable oil flow, and clear sight glasses throughout their extended service life.
